The Leadership Academy has defined the hallmark attributes of leadership in the Sydney context. The attributes are our shared leadership principles which identify how we want to show up as leaders and achieve our strategic aspirations.

The attributes were developed following extensive consultation in 2023 with over 270 staff and key stakeholders through focus groups, interviews and meetings. They are relevant for all leaders at all levels across the University.

Collaborative

  • Work with others to prioritise, and achieve University goals 
  • Invest in mutual partnerships across and outside the University
  • Share information openly, transparently and ethically, surfacing issues with good intent

Accountable

  • Take decisive, outcome-focused action in service of student, staff or community needs
  • Address challenging people and situations
  • Coach for performance, learning and wellbeing
  • Take and give responsibility for high performance, behaviour and excellence

Courageous

  • Trust and empower others to achieve shared results
  • Appropriately manage risk and make decisions that create positive impact for students, staff and community members
  • Speak up in a respectful way 
  • Display vulnerability, humility and a willingness to learn to create trust

Adaptable

  • Be curious and open to diverse perspectives and experiences
  • Seek/engage with external thinking, being agile and changing approaches when needed
  • Experiment and reflect to learn, create, iterate and innovate

Inclusive

  • Create an inclusive culture that promotes awareness, equity and shared sense of belonging
  • Prioritise student, staff and community well-being and experiences
  • Actively listen, and show empathy, compassion and respect for others
